Lindsay Lohan Fingernail Message: Contempt?

By Tanya Roth, Esq. on July 07, 2010 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

If you, like this blogger, idly admired the pretty paint job on actress Lindsay Lohan's fingernails as she dried her tears in court on July 6, we all were missing something. Reports out today show that not only did Ms. Lohan have an attractive pastel manicure, but she had a message painted on one fingernail as well. The words on the Lohan fingernail are unprintable, but end in the letter u. You may be able to guess which finger held the message.

Next question, why do we care? Experts opine that if the two word message was aimed at the court, Lindsay could extend her current 90 day jail sentence with a punishment for contempt of court. According to FOXNews, some attorneys think this is a creative way to get extra jail time. "it would be a separate charge for contempt," New York City Public Defender Stacy Schneider told FOX. "She could have an entire extra sentence heaped on top of her current one. If the judge were angry enough, it could run even consecutively."

Contempt of court refers to actions which either defy a court's authority, cast disrespect on a court, or impede the ability of the court to perform its function. Luckily for Lohan, Judge Marsha Revel's eyesight is not good enough to see a fingernail at the defense table all the way from the bench. Unluckily for her, the newswire cameras were. It is not certain though, the judge would recall her for contempt that she did not actually observe during the hearing.

Some are blaming Lohan's attorney for not ensuring her client was correctly attired for court. Proper and respectful dress is mandatory, especially for those hoping to get leniency or at a minimum, a spot of sympathy, from a judge during sentencing. Defender Stacy Schneider tells FOX the blame should be on Lohan attorney Shawn Chapman Holley, saying, "It's up to her lawyer to catch things like that. A bra strap that shows or a boxer line that shows is pretty bad, but this tops the cake."

Whether or not she faces contempt charges, Lohan will no doubt miss her awesomely talented manicurist during the 90 day jail sentence she is currently subject to. She must surrender July 20.
