David Flory, a long-time physics professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, was arrested on Sunday after police concluded an investigation into his self-described "hobby."
Flory admitted to running a website, Southwest Companions, that caters to both prostitutes and Johns, encouraging solicitation, sex for money, and the rating of prostitutes.
Unfortunately, the Associated Press reports that he made very little money.
According to Albuquerque Police Lt. William Roseman, David Flory was ratted out by a few prostitutes and johns, causing local police to conduct a six-month investigation, reports the Associated Press.
The website, which offers different levels of access depending on your "trust level," caters to about 1,400 members, 200 of which are prostitutes living primarily in New Mexico.
To get access to message boards, which the AP reports include a rating system, a person must sleep with a prostitute who then reports back to Flory.
Charged with 40 counts of promoting prostitution, Flory claims that the site was a hobby--a safe place for people to hook up.
In the eyes of the law, this excuse is pretty much worthless.
Promoting prostitution includes inducing someone to become a prostitute and soliciting a patron for a prostitute.
Though these women were likely already prostitutes, promotion often includes inducing someone to engage in another act of prostitution.
And as for solicitation, by requiring that people engage in sexual activity with a prostitute prior to being granted further access to the site, Flory was probably engaging in solicitation.
So, hobby or not, David Flory is a pimp.
