A young father was beaten by bikers in front of his wife and 2-year-old child after the man "[tapped] the fender" of one of the group's motorcycles on a New York City highway.
Video captured by one of the bikers showed members of the group damaging and slashing the tires of the family's Range Rover after the collision, causing the scared dad to attempt to flee, ABC News reports. The chase ended with bikers smashing the windows of the family's car and beating the 33-year-old father.
The video clip uploaded by one of the bikers reveals many details, but what charges could the bikers potentially face?
No Arrests Made in Assault
In what seems like a harrowing chase, bikers from the blog HollywoodStuntz clashed with a family in a black SUV, leaving the injured father with "two black eyes" and "stitches on his face and chest," reports The New York Post.
You can watch the bikers' video of the incident here:
Police on Monday had not made any arrests in connection to the assault. According to ABC News, the New York Police Department denied rumors that the driver of the Range Rover had hit and killed a biker during the incident.
Although this father's beating was a fairly extreme case, in New York, the most basic assault occurs when a person:
- Causes injury to another person with intent to cause that injury, or
- Recklessly causes an injury to another person without intent.
In this case, however, the dad's attackers may be charged with aggravated assault, especially if any of the bikers used a potentially deadly weapon like a knife.
Was This a Gang Offense?
No sources have confirmed that the riders on Sunday were gang affiliated, and New York does not have specific charges for gang crimes.
Prosecutors have tried to use the state's terrorism statute to prosecute gang offenses in the past, but the results have been mixed.
Police are investigating various bike clubs as a result of the incident, and the Post reports that one of the riders may be affiliated with the New Rochelle motorcycle club.
