Summer Celebrity Divorce Roundup

It's been a cruel, cruel summer, at least for celebrity couples. Not even our favorite fictional characters were spared the celebrity divorce.

Here are a few of the cruelest breakups this summer and the mashed-up names we'll miss the most:

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Ben & Jen. Jen & Ben. Jaffleck and Barner. OK, we're terrible at celebrity couple names. But after 10 years of seemingly idyllic marriage (almost suspiciously exactly 10 years), the two split up in June. And now there are rumors about Ben and the former nanny? Ouch, baby, very ouch.

Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani

Rock royalty hit the rocks last week with the No Doubt front woman and solo singer filing for divorce from the former Bush front man and actor. Their relationship had been rocky from its 2002 start, but did produce three rock star status sons: Kingston, 9; Zuma, 6; and Apollo, 17 months.

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy

Really, Muppets people? Really? Kermit and Miss Piggy's breakup seems needlessly cruel, and strangely professional for, you know, puppets. As Kermit described it, "Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically. I guess it's just coming out in the press now. It can be tough to work with your ex. It can be tough to be the executive producer on your ex's talk show, particularly when your ex is a pig." Although there is debate as to whether Miss Piggy and "Kermie" were ever married to begin with (um, her name ain't Mrs. Piggy), the puppet power couple have definitely gone their separate ways.

Homer and Marge Simpson

OK, this one stings the most. After everything they've been through, Homer and Marge's marriage was a shining beacon to us all that love could endure anything and everything life (and animators) could throw at you. Now with the news that the two are legally separating next season, I don't know what to believe. We are cast adrift on the seas of life with no love lighthouse to guide our ship of love.

Whether divorce, legal separation, or a "conscious uncoupling," celebrity breakups can be traumatizing. Let's just hope everyone else can keep it together until fall arrives.
