Crossing the Bar: To Try, Fight...And Succeed

Thanksgiving.  Turkeys, pumpkin pies, hot cider, and...California Bar Exam results.  The past weekend marked the release of Bar results from the July 2009 exam.  California Bar takers were able to log in on Friday evening to find out if their name was featured on the pass list and the results went 'world wide web' on Sunday.

Among the hundreds who passed the California Bar Exam was one particular student who you may recall from an earlier post here.  Sara Granda is a UC Davis Law grad who faced a number of hurdles just to make it to exam day.  An accident left her paralyzed from the neck down in her first year of college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ten years ago.  But that didn't stop her from pursuing three higher education degrees, culminating with her J.D.

When the California State Bar refused to allow her to take the July 2009 Bar exam because of a payment processing misunderstanding, Sara had to again dig deep to stay focused on studying for the exam while simultaneously taking up a legal fight for the chance to sit for the three-day test.

It would take intervention from the California Supreme Court, backed by the state governor before Granda received the final okay to take the test.  And that was just a day before infamous Day 1.

But whether your believe fighters are born or made, Sara has earned her title.  Despite all of the obstacles in her path, she took the country's arguably most-difficult Bar exam.  And she passed.

Congratulations to Bar passers across the country.  Sometimes the good fight yields a win.  If you didn't make the pass list this time, remember, no one said the fight would be easy...Sara might have some words about that.
