His and Hers: What to Wear to Your Office Holiday Party

Last week we went over the three big don'ts of holiday office parties, and while we gave some helpful advice on what not to wear (i.e., ugly Christmas sweaters and too much cleavage), we thought it might be helpful for some tips on what to wear.

Here are some suggestions for what to wear to your holiday party for both guys and gals.

Gentlemen

1. Please Shave

"Movember," "No Shave November," whatever you want to call it, that awful (if charitable) month is over. Please shave. That's all.

2. Shine Your Shoes

We know, you're so sad that you don't have all the fashion choices that women have so make the most of what you've got. Make sure your accessories are on point, and clean. Splurge on a shoe shine and get your dapper on.

3. Wear Work Clothes

Unless particular attire is indicated on the invitation, then you'll probably dress in a similar way for the party as you do for work. If you really want to go there, you can wear a festive tie, but do you really want to be that guy?

Ladies

1. Three Letters: LBD

Little. Black. Dress. If you don't already have one (or 10) in your closet -- go get one now. This is probably the one most important article of clothing a woman could own. You can dress it up for more of a party feel, you can business it up with a jacket, and you can take it from day to night. The only thing this dress will not do is cook you dinner.

2. Be Festive

Though your look should still be professional, it doesn't mean that you can't get festive. A sparkly brooch, or fun earrings can brighten up your look and take you a step beyond the typical work day look. Or hey, we all love a great pair of shoes.

3. Makeup Matters

You could wear a bit more makeup -- maybe a smokier eye, or a red lip, just not both at the same time please. Remember, this is not your regular party look so skip the M·A·C signature look with fake lashes -- save that for the weekend with friends.

It's unfortunate, but appearances go a long way. Don't be the talk of the holiday office party because of what you were wearing. Remember to look, and act, professionally, and it will all be ok.
