Not Going Out on Valentine's Day?: Top 5 Reasons to Stay In

There are many reasons lawyers might not be able to go out on Valentine's Day: crowded restaurants, heavy workload, no one to go out with.

But there are just as many reasons to say phooey to the outside world on V-Day and just stay in. Here are our top five:

1. Binge Watch TV

God knows that most legal professionals' schedules do not allow them to keep up with TV like most Americans, so a Valentine's night of binge TV-watching may be the perfect treat.

We recommend you start with Netflix's original series "House of Cards," which will be dropping on Valentine's Day for your binging pleasure. Honorable mention goes to "The Walking Dead" or "Scandal" for a night of episodic cliffhangers, or our favorite here at FindLaw, "The Good Wife."

2. Regain Your Creative Side

It may be hard to remember, but you actually had other interests outside the law before you started law school. Creativity is a much underappreciated resource in our profession, and taking a night to get your creative juices flowing will really pay off.

Try writing some non-legal prose -- maybe a story about a headstrong, single attorney and her journey through an uncharted galaxy (think "Ally McBeal" meets "Star Trek: Voyager") -- or maybe even just doodling on some sketch paper. If at all possible, be creative using your hands: assemble a layer cake, paint some pottery, or design and bake some Shrinky Dinks.

Remind yourself that you're a human being and a lawyer by creating something this Valentine's Day.

3. Watch a Lighthearted Legal Movie

While it may be tempting to watch "The Holiday" or "The Notebook" while at home on Valentine's Day, there are plenty of great legal-themed movies you might appreciate. And many of them are comedies.

If they're available, try to watch:

  • "My Cousin Vinny"
  • "Liar Liar"
  • "Legally Blonde"

Watching Jim Carrey flap around like possessed man with no bones will almost certainly make you crack a smile on your V-Day at home.

4. Spend Time With Loved Ones

We know time is short to spend with your friends and family outside the world of law, so use this Valentine's Day at home to spend time with them. Since restaurants will almost certainly be jam-packed with couples trying to make a romantic night, a quiet dinner at home can really hit the spot.

To our tastes, nothing says Valentine's Day at home like order-in Thai food.

5. Retail Therapy -- Online Edition

You bring in the big bucks, so why not use Valentine's Day as a day to treat yo' self. Fire up Amazon and consider some frivolous feel-good purchases such as:

Nothing says Valentine's Day at home like gathering tracking numbers for presents to yourself. Have a Happy Valentine's Day y'all!
