10 Nifty Gift Ideas for the Law Student in Your Life

Those law students are so needy. Coming back home after final exams, they'll be a psychological wreck. So what's better than reminding them of the law they just forgot with some cool law-related gifts?

OK, so maybe that shouldn't be all that you get them, but come on: A trick gavel would be pretty funny.

So what gifts are there for law students? Here are 10 ideas to get you started:

1. Law School in a Box.

A perennial favorite, Law School in a Box comes with trading cards for legal heroes, a pamphlet containing everything you need to know about the law, and a diploma written in Lawyer Latin.

2. A Lawyer Pen.

If you didn't heed our gift advice for practicing lawyers, the least you can do is heed it for law students. Note-taking is a dying art (at least on paper), so show your law student you care with a nice pen (that they'll promptly lose).

3. Entertainment.

Whether it's the entire "Breaking Bad" series on DVD or the "Game of Thrones" books, your law student just wants to relax. He or she can do that easily with the gift of entertainment -- whatever that entails.

4. Coffee.

Law students need juice -- and by juice, I mean coffee. You can do like my darling mother does and buy bags of Dunkin' Donuts coffee (those stores are still a rare sight Out West), or you can buy gift cards. Maybe the latter, because law students don't have time to make their own food.

5. Study Materials.

Why waste a good gift on something as prosaic as a Con Law supplement? Think of it this way: Student gets good grades, student graduates at the top of the class, gets a good job, and then can buy all the gifts he or she didn't get from you. Check and mate.

6. Clothes.

And here, I'm talkin' fancy lawyer-type getup. Law students always need nice clothes for going to court, going to jobs, and the occasional mock trial. Your law student would just love a gift card to his or her favorite store. (Don't buy clothes for other people. Just don't.)

7. A Fancy Portfolio.

You've got a sharp suit and shoes, but where are you going to put copies of your resume? Not in a backpack. Your law student would appreciate a professional leather (or pleather, if you're vegan) portfolio for storing papers.

8. Business Cards.

Many law schools offer students business cards, but for the ones that don't (or for students who want cooler-looking cards), business cards are a great idea. Even better is a gift card to a business card website, like Vista Print, or Moo.com (if you want to spend a little more and get better cards).

9. A Gavel.

Yeah, these are also standard for law students. But you can make it fun! It could be a silver gavel, or a plush gavel. (Sadly, though, my man-sized gavel costume idea from Halloween is still not a reality.)

10. Booze.

We're not talking Miller High Life here. Lawyers prefer a classier type of spirit, something in the bourbon family, perhaps. That is to say, I prefer something in the bourbon family. If your law student isn't interested, FindLaw has my mailing address.
