Should Lawyers Marry Each Other?

By Peter Clarke, JD | Last updated on

Popular wisdom seems to indicate that lawyers fall someplace along the spectrum between petty thief and outright psychopath. If this stereotype holds true, then asking whether you should marry a lawyer is like asking whether you should marry a cold-blooded serial killer.

According to Forbes, psychopaths are most highly attracted to the job titles of CEO and, indeed, lawyer. So, stereotypes hold at least some weight. However, there are still many good reasons why lawyers should consider marrying each other.

The Divorce Rate for Lawyers Is Surprisingly Low

Compared to other professions, the divorce rate for lawyers is surprisingly low. According to a study published by Springer Science, the occupations with the highest divorce rates include actors, musicians, commercial travelers, telephone operators, and physicians. Notice anything missing from the top five?

If you're looking for lawyers, you have go all the way down towards the lower half of the list where lawyers are shown to only have an 11.6% divorce rate. Not bad for a bunch of psychopaths!

Other studies have shown that the divorce rate is higher for female rather than male lawyers. The reason for this difference is a matter of speculation.

Marrying a Lawyer Can Help Your Career

Relationship gurus love to talk about how your spouse influences your career success. In this regard, if you're a lawyer, there are several reasons why marrying another lawyer will help your own career.

The best partner for your career is a conscientious partner. This is good news, since lawyers are trained to be conscientious: they attack problems with pragmatism and an eye for results. By marrying a conscientious person, you will be more likely to achieve higher earnings, greater job satisfaction, and an increased chance of promotion.

If you're a single lawyer, go ahead and check out those dating websites and dating apps for lawyers. Even if you don't find a fairytale spouse in a lawyer, at least you'll never be bored.
