Top 3 Cool Legal Jobs This Week: Beer and Wine Law

Thankfully, those regulations mean plenty of jobs for attorneys with a taste for fine drinking -- and an ability to navigate a wide range of regulatory bodies and laws.

1. Corporate Counsel, Contracts, The Boston Beer Company
The Boston Beer Company is the second largest craft brewery in American. They're the people that bring you Sam Adams beer and encourage you to curse at work. (Really, the company has what's affectionately known as an 'F-- You' policy. Don't worry, it's meant to create an open environment, not a hostile one.) And you could help them do the brew they do as part of their contracts team.
The Boston Beer Company is looking for an in-house attorney to take responsibility over a range of commercial matters, from contracts, to real estate, to records management and general legal support, with a particular focus on contract preparation and review and risk assessment and mitigation.
2. Staff Counsel, E. & J. Gallo Winery
The Gallo brothers founded their winery in 1933, just as Prohibition was being undone, and have since grown into the largest wine exporter in California and one of the biggest wine operations in the world. You can now find their vino under dozens of different labels, from Carlo Rossi, to Barefoot wines, to Thunderbird.
As staff counsel at Gallo, you'd work with both the legal and compliance department. That work would involve everything from counseling on marketing practices to reviewing international sales agreements to ensuring supply chain compliance.
3. Temporary Attorney, Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission
A heavily regulated industry like the beer, wine, and spirits industry means a lot of jobs for regulators. That's where the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission comes in. The TABC is in charge of regulating the alcoholic beverage industry in Texas, including the collection of $200 million in annual taxes and fees.
The commission is looking for a temporary attorney to joint its general counsel division, with a focus on Texas's Public Information Act. You'd work on document review and preparation, open records requests, and communicating with members of the public and beverage industry.
Bonus: Executive Director, Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers
Alcohol is more than just an occasional indulgence or a practice area for many lawyers, with rates of alcohol abuse much higher in the legal industry than elsewhere. Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers provides services for attorneys recovering from alcohol and drug dependency. They're currently searching for an executive director to help guide and develop the important work they do.
