The Official FindLaw Blog - News, Insights and Milestones from the FindLaw Team

FindLaw.com is the web's most visited legal site, with over 4 million visitors each month. One reason for FindLaw's success may be the broad spectrum of legal assistance, blogs, news and information available to the public. One of the most well respected elements of our legal news and information is the thought provoking legal commentary of Writ.

Since 2000, FindLaw's Writ has provided daily legal commentary by top legal minds, providing analysis and commentary on current legal issues. Writ contributors include well known legal and political names such as former White House counsel John Dean, Congressmen Bob Barr, Howard Berman and Henry Waxman, as well as legal practitioners, professors who are considered leaders in their fields and several former U.S. Supreme Court clerks. In the areas of Constitutional Law and Civil Rights in particular, Writ is also known as a leader. In 2009, former Writ columnist Edward Lazarus was tapped to be Chief of Staff to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski. Contributors such as Vikram David Amar and Michael C. Dorf are regularly consulted by major media outlets such as Time, CNN and The New York Times.

When did you join the FindLaw team / how did you get here?

August 2006. Prior to joining FindLaw, I worked in communications at the state teacher's union headquarters. When I started at FindLaw, I worked as a Website Project Manager for about 2 years. With my background in communications and graphic design, I naturally transitioned into the Video Field Producer role when we launched our video products in 2008.

FindLaw believes that no small part of its success is its dedication to ensuring that we seek out talented individuals to join the FindLaw team. On August 2, FindLaw demonstrated this commitment to our talent pool by welcoming Elizabeth Beastrom as Vice President of Finance. In her new role with FindLaw, Ms. Beastrom will oversee the strategies and initiatives that relate to FindLaw's financial performance. She will be stepping in to the role previously held by Paul Fischer. Mr. Fischer will continue as Vice President, Finance for Business of Law.

It has been nearly a month since FindLaw.com, the web's most popular legal website, announced the launch of its sister site, FindLaw UK. Like FindLaw, FindLaw UK uses news, blogs, articles, communities and access to legal professionals to help consumers get clear, concise and helpful legal information. With over 5,000 pages of content on its launch, FindLaw UK entered the market place ready to help legal consumers get the information they were looking for.

Legal consumers in the UK voiced their need for reliable, understandable legal information and help finding a solicitor if they need one. Since FindLaw UK began filling that need, several top legal information blogs and news organizations have taken note.

Since we announced the launch of the LawBrain wiki back in February, LawBrain has been growing nonstop. The legal dictionary, encyclopedia, and community now totals 4,500 articles and more than 21,000 edits made.

So what's new with LawBrain? And what can you do with it? Here's a sampling of the latest, and what you can do with LawBrain right now:

When did you join the FindLaw team/how did you get here?

I joined FindLaw in March of 2008 leading to my departure from Medtronic, Inc.

It seems like Kermit the Frog may have been off base when he said it wasn't easy being green. Our employees have a variety of different options when it comes to being green within a program called The Green Team. The Green Team's mission is to help promote and implement specific improvements to help our business and our employees live and operate in a more environmentally sustainable fashion. From tending to an organic community garden on campus, to caring for bluebirds, there are plenty of Green Teams to choose from!

Honey Blake, an Account Manager at FindLaw, shares her experience as a volunteer with two Green Team Initiatives: the Prairie Seed program and the Garden program. Prairie Seed is a Green Team that restores and preserves landscapes in order to create and sustain ecosystems and their diverse communities of plants and wildlife. This particular team devotes its time to removing invasive plants and seeding natural prairie grasses and wildflowers on the Eagan, Minnesota campus.

What's in an 'intern?' A go-fer and coffee fetcher? Another pair of hands? Just another person to keep busy during the summer months? FindLaw's Eagan, Minnesota office has confronted these challenges and stereotypes head on in the 3 years since they began and developed the FindLaw Customer Operations summer intern program. With a focus on real world experiences and real world results, the team leaders and mangers at FindLaw and their interns have developed an experience that gives as good as it gets.

The FindLaw internship program draws from full time students at university and grad programs from around Minnesota such as the University of Minnesota, William Mitchell School of Law and Bethel University. The program has been structured to provide a consistent base of experience starting at the beginning with the recruitment and interview process. The structure then allows the employees at FindLaw to give and get what their interns need most, meaningful assignments from a project based program. Each intern is given a mentor at the beginning of their time with FindLaw. With that mentor, they plan goals for their time with the company. The mentors meet often with their interns and then meet with the team leads to insure all feedback on work projects is communicated.

FindLaw UK Set For Launch

| No TrackBacks

FindLaw goes international: the FindLaw UK website (www.findlaw.co.uk) has its public unveiling this week, and we are of course very excited about the new site.

Just like the U.S.-based FindLaw site (www.findlaw.com), FindLaw UK is primarily a collection of free legal resources for consumers. It includes many helpful articles with free legal information; a question-and-answer community forum; news feeds provided by Reuters; and tools to help consumers find a solicitor to assist them with their legal issue via FindLaw UK's Contact Law service.
