As we've discussed here before, we are always adding great new content to FindLaw.com. Our content team never stops adding new legal information to help consumers get answers to their legal questions. This week, we're highlighting some of the newest criminal law content on FindLaw. The team has recently rolled out a number of new and updated articles to highlight some of the most common questions encountered in the criminal law field.
Here are just a few of the new and updated topic areas in our Learn About the Law section:
Possession of drugs and alcohol. New content covers open-container laws and minor-in-possession statutes.
DUI. A new article on ignition interlock devices explains how they work, and how they are used in DUI sentencing.
Statutory rape. In an area of criminal law rife with misconceptions, which are compounded by widely varying state laws, our statutory rape article covers the basics: age of consent; how statutory rape differs from other sex crimes; "Romeo and Juliet" laws; and the application of strict liability.
Shoplifting. This is another area that raises many questions for consumers. FindLaw's shoplifting page covers the elements of shoplifting (including concealment); retailers' rights in combating shoplifting, including the propriety of in-store detention; and the various levels of potential punishments.
Harassment. Here, we help readers distinguish between civil and criminal harassment, and discuss the relatively recent phenomenon of cyberstalking.
Probable cause. One of the most widely-heard legal terms, and a very tricky one to apply, given the many settings in which it may be used and courts' ongoing interpretation of what can constitute probable cause. Starting from the original Fourth Amendment language, we discuss how the phrase "probable cause" is applied and interpreted in the context of warrants, arrests, searches, and seizure of property.
