FindLaw.com is the site that legal consumers and professionals come to for accessible and useful legal information. In addition to the kind of newsworthy information found on FindLaw's blogs and commentary, and the guidance visitors can get from the Learn About the Law articles, the Answers community and the lawyer directory; FindLaw offers even more.

In a new release, FindLaw presents helpful information that anyone can use on starting a small business. In a difficult economy, many people who are unable to find work in more traditional ways are stepping out on their own and turning something they love into a small business. Taking those first steps toward starting a small business can be daunting, but FindLaw saw a way to provide some help. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 600,000 new businesses are launched every year in the United States. If you are one of those who would like to turn their passion into a thriving business, there are several steps FindLaw recommends should be taken first.

As 2011 gets underway, FindLaw.com continues to reach more attorneys on a daily basis. Recently, we had a chance to talk with Bill Potthoff, FindLaw Sr. Client Development Consultant in St. Louis, Missouri, who saw a dramatic increase in his clients' receptiveness to online marketing in 2010.

"Not a day goes by that I don't hear 'I am done with the yellow pages' from an attorney," says Bill. Moreover, in a recent article, Michael S. Greco, President of the American Bar Association, states that approximately 80% of U.S. lawyers are either a solo practitioner, or work in small firms. Since these clients are our target demographic, this bodes well for FindLaw.

  • Jared Loughner Silently Invokes Miranda Rights: FindLaw's Blotter discusses one of the many angles of the criminal case of Jared Loughner, the man accused of the Tucson shooting that took the lives of six and left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords fighting for her life. Loughner's silence is his right under the famous Miranda ruling of the U.S. Supreme court. Blotter addresses the well known but sometimes misunderstood Miranda Rights.

When did you join the FindLaw team / how did you get here?

I joined the FindLaw team in December of 2008 after working at West, a Thomson Reuters business for 3 years previously. My experience at West included working with Westlaw.com on codes content.

Legal Commentary:

  • The "I (Heart) Boobies!" Bracelets Controversy Goes to Court: Why the Students Are Right and the Schools Are Wrong: Writ's Senior Editor Julie Hilden explores the timely and unusual litigation over the breast cancer support bracelets students are wearing to school. Schools have prohibited them, but Hilden argues this should be seen as a violation of the students' First Amendment Rights, even if there are Supreme Court cases that may support the schools' actions.
