Welcome to another post from our "Meet the FindLaw Team" series. "Meet the FindLaw Team" provides insight into the day-to-day lives of our colleagues. Today we feature Super Lawyers Online Application Developer David Malouf. Get to know David by reading about his experiences at FindLaw below.
What is your current title?
I am an Online Application Developer for Super Lawyers.
When did you join the Super Lawyers team and how did you get here?
I was hired in December 2010, a little less than a year after the Super Lawyers acquisition by Thomson Reuters. My last job involved leadership and management consulting for smaller non-profits and churches. The organization I was with ended up needing some highly specialized contact management. When this last recession hit, we lost most of our funding, so I started looking for part-time programming work. Instead, I ended up working for Super Lawyers full-time.
What interests you most about lawyer marketing or your functional area?
I really like complex, semi-chaotic systems: larger groups of people, the human brain and large web applications. Because we are a smaller business, I get to be involved with almost all of the various pieces of our website. I love getting all of them to work in concert. I also really like efficiency and really don't like repetition, so I naturally enjoy making computers do repetitive tasks in a highly efficient manner so we humans can go about creating.
I also find the people I work with rather great -- my boss is brilliant as well as a good guy, and my coworkers are all so different and enjoyable.
What activities does your work day typically involve?
My job is to implement what other people want or need. This includes altering and creating web pages, creating 'services' that allow FindLaw and Super Lawyers servers to communicate directly, or creating in-house applications that allow others to do their work more easily.
My other major activity is helping others enjoy their job. This can include having humorous conversations with coworkers, helping customers 'program' their own websites (lawyers don't usually have time to also be geeks, so I try to make these calls as painless as possible), and pitching in when deadlines loom.
What are your interests outside of FindLaw?
I really like doing just about anything with my family. My wife and two teenage kids are some of the coolest people I know! I like playing music, anything active, and deep conversations and debates about philosophy, theology and programming concepts. My wife and I both mentor high school students, which we love. And I really like to vacuum!
