San Francisco, CA, April 28, 2009 - To broaden service offerings in the rapidly diversifying intellectual property marketplace, global law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP and Northern California-based Ovidian Group, LLC (Ovidian) announced that they are collaborating to meet client needs. We believe this is the first collaboration of its kind.
Ovidian is a newly launched IP asset management and business advisory firm that provides services to companies, investors and entrepreneurs around the world. Ovidian offers services such as IP portfolio management, strategic IP business consulting, structuring and outsourcing of corporate IP departments, and assistance in dealing with the range of new IP investment firms, brokers and risk management vehicles that have arisen in recent years. Ovidian was established recently by Joseph Siino, a prominent Silicon Valley IP attorney who most recently served as Yahoo!'s senior vice president for global intellectual property. Previously, Mr. Siino built and ran the IP strategy and technology transactions practice group at law firm Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison in San Francisco.
"The IP sphere is expanding beyond the traditional parameters of a law firm IP practice," said Michael A. Jacobs, co-head of Morrison & Foerster's Intellectual Property Litigation practice group. "Clients are asking questions that cross traditional boundaries between law firms and consulting firms. Where possible, Morrison and Ovidian will work together to meet these emergent client needs."
Mr. Jacobs added, "We have known Joe Siino for more than a decade as one of the country's preeminent intellectual property lawyers as well as a forward-thinking IP business leader and policy advocate. We have been looking for ways to work together. The trends developing in IP - from patent transactions arising out of bankruptcies, to offshore IP holding companies, to defensive patent pools - are extremely exciting. Our new collaboration leverages the complementary strengths of Morrison & Foerster's IP legal services and Ovidian's investment advisory and business consulting expertise."
"The level of client representation that Morrison & Foerster provides, the diversity and complexity of its practice, and its tremendous reputation for quality and results make it an ideal colleague for a wide range of IP business opportunities the world over," said Mr. Siino. "The pioneering IP work done by Morrison & Foerster in Asia is one example of the powerful entrée the firm brings to emerging IP marketplaces. Intellectual property is changing and thriving, and I am delighted with the many opportunities presented by the collaboration between our two firms."
