Spring Cleaning Your Law Firm Before Summer Comes

We're well into spring, but if you're like most lawyers, you've been busy dealing with your case load and managing your firm, so you've let things like spring cleaning pass you by. It's not too late, it's still technically spring, and you've got almost two more months before it's officially summer.

Here are some tips for you to spring clean your firm.

1. Tech

With all of the recent security bugs, many programs have released software updates, so set aside some time to make sure that all your software is up to date. While you're at it, you may want to change your passwords too.

Another great thing to "spring clean" is your email. We bet your inbox contains lots of old useless emails that just get in the way of you finding the important messages. Delete what you don't need, and maybe try to get in the habit of doing so regularly so you don't have such a big job of it next spring.

2. People

No, we don't mean clean your staff. But, with law school graduates about to drown the legal market, it may be a good idea to look at your staffing needs and determine whether you need to hire, or fire and replace staff.

3. Office

Hopefully you have some sort of cleaning service for your office; you may want to ask them to do a more thorough go of it once in a while -- and now would be a great time. Also, look at your own desk. It's not possible to dust a desk that is covered in piles of paper. Try to take this time to get organized. File away what doesn't need to be out, archive files for cases that are closed, and take a minute to spruce up the place. It will make you feel much better, and like you're starting fresh.

4. Marketing

Has marketing fallen by the wayside? How do you expect to gain more clients? Take this time to reconsider how you want to market your firm. If you find that you are too busy to even think about this, then consider hiring professionals who know a thing or two about lawyer marketing -- like FindLaw.

There's no clear formula for spring cleaning -- you can do whatever you like to refresh your practice as we transition from winter to summer. Just use this time to reinvigorate your firm, and get all the staff involved.
