Livescribe Connect's Smartpen: Attorney Productivity Booster?

By Cynthia Hsu, Esq. | Last updated on

It seems like a pen from the future.

Livescribe's smartpen has this cool feature that lets you "record" your doodlings or written notes as you write them, along with accompanying audio, store them in the pen, save them, and then upload them to whoever you want to share them with after you connect it to your PC.

Now, Livescribe has gotten even more futuristic with its "Connect" upgrade, which let you set up sharing instructions for the pen while you write your doodle, instead of after you hook it up to your PC.

How does this work? Well, you write the instructions down to the pen. For example, if you draw a double line and scrawl out "Facebook" or "Google Docs," the next time you sync your pen to your computer it will automatically update and share according to your desires.

The Connect feature requires that the pen be connected to your computer via wire - there is no upgrade yet that will allow the pen to share information wirelessly.

For attorneys, this can mean saving time by not having to scan in scrawled notes. And, the images that come out of the Livescribe smartpen are clearer than pixilated scanned images.

Having the audio with the uploaded image can also be a great productivity boost for attorneys. How often is it that we are sketching out some complicated flowchart trying to illustrate a point - only to realize that the only person that can understand said flowchart is ourselves?

Well, instead of having to type up some long-winded explanatory e-mail, you can just explain your thought process while writing, and then send the two files all at the same time to your recipients.

With the new Connect upgrade, sharing your notes and doodlings with colleagues will probably seem even more instantaneous.

Most importantly, the Livescribe smartpen is not that expensive - and nor is the Connect upgrade. The entry-level model, with 2 GB of storage space, will run about $99.95, and the Connect upgrade is around $15.
