3rd Circuit Closed Today, Extended Deadlines and More

Sitting in our sunny outpost in California, we are very sincere when we say that we are happy not to be in your shoes right now. While you've been inundated with snow, and then more snow, California trees think it's spring because of our drought conditions.

But, enough about the weather, let's get down to business. While snow days are expected at schools, sometimes big kids get to take advantage of them too. If you practice in the Third Circuit you may have noticed that court was closed yesterday and today, and any deadlines set for February 13th or 14th, have been extended to Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

Since Phil the groundhog saw his shadow, ensuring us (or you) of six more weeks of winter, here are some tips to get you through the inevitable upcoming snow storms.

1. Check in With the Court

If you have a deadline, hearing or any business with the Third Circuit when a storm is forecasted, the first place to check to see of any scheduling changes is the Third Circuit Court of Appeals website. Normally, any weather-related court closures will be posted on the home page, but if you are not sure, you can always reach the Clerk's Office at 215.597.2995.

2. Back Everything Up

If you are in an area affected by storms, be sure to save any files that you are working on often, and make sure all your technology is fully charged. In the case of a blackout, you don't want to be left with no power at all.

3. Be Reasonable

If the Mayor advises everyone to stay home, don't be a hero and charge your way through two-feet of snow to be the only person at the office. If you need to, you can always bill from home. If a storm is coming, make sure you have all the files you need with you in case you need to work from home, and make sure you hit the grocery store and get any necessary supplies that you may need for a few days.

We hope these storms are the last of them, but we know how that crazy east coast weather can be. Stay warm, and stay focused -- spring is around the corner.
