Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
A 19-year-old identity thief targeted America's rich and famous -- ranging from Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner to the head of the FBI -- but, not surprisingly, was ultimately caught by law enforcement.
Luis Flores Jr. illegally gained access to the high profile victims' credit cards and transferred thousands of dollars into his personal bank account, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
Flores was recently sentenced to three and half years in federal prison for his acts of identity theft.
Identity Theft of Kardashian and Jenner
Albeit a foolhardy criminal trend because of the odds of getting caught, identity thieves are known to target celebrities for theft and fraud.
In this case, Flores, who worked at an AT&T call center, took Kardashian and Kris Jenners' credit card and social security numbers and changed some of her accounts to his personal accounts. The same happened to Robert Mueller, then director of the FBI, as well as to Ashton Kutcher and Paris Hilton, reports the Sentinel.
With enough identifying information about an individual, a criminal can take over that individual's identity to conduct a wide range of crimes, including making false applications for loans and credit cards. In this case, Flores allegedly opened numerous fraudulent online applications for new American Express accounts in the names of Hilton and Kutcher.
Other Celebrities and Politicians Targeted
After searching Flores' apartment, federal agents discovered a flash drive that contained Social Security numbers, bank and credit card accounts, and credit reports for all of the victims in the case, as well as Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, Bill Gates, Beyonce Knowles, Tom Cruise, and others.
Flores was sentenced to three and half years in prison for credit card fraud and aggravated identity theft. Flores should consider himself lucky that his efforts were thwarted early on. If not, his prison time would have been far worse.
