Minimum wage increases took effect in a number of states on January 1st, including California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, and Oregon. In other states, laws passed in 2007 mandate that a specific increase in minimum wage take effect on January 1, 2008. At $8.07 per hour for qualifying workers, Washington is the state with the highest minimum wage in the nation. California joins Massachusetts with the second-highest in the nation at $8.00 per hour.
