As a business owner you have many concerns. Whether your employees make it to the gym is probably not one of them. But perhaps it should be.
The health and well-being of your workers contributes to your business. When your people are thriving and have time to look out for themselves and their health, they also have more and better energy to put into work. So here are five things you can do to help encourage employee exercise and ensure you get the best for your business, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Offering employees a discount on a gym membership is one way to encourage more exercise. Try to strike a deal with a gym near your office and get a group rate. To do this, just contact nearby gyms via e-mail and inquire about any arrangements they already have. If they do not have such a deal for offices already, suggest as much. A savvy business is not going to turn down this kind of opportunity.
Build an Exercise Room
Depending on the size of your business and company resources, you might consider building a gym or exercise center on-site. This has added advantages that just offering a gym membership does not, such as cultivating community among employees. When people work out together it can improve the way they work together as they form new bonds and gain insight into one another without even talking.
Start a Club
If you can't build a gym but believe in exercising together, consider starting exercise clubs. You can organize weekly walks or jogs or even grab the biggest conference room available and have a yoga teacher come to visit one morning a week.
Integrate Exercise Into Office Life
This suggestion really requires very little from you, the employer. All you have to do is let people know that you understand the benefits of movement and you support workers who do it. Lead the charge by switching your sitting to a standing desk or taking laps around the office, and letting people know it's not just to monitor them or say hi, but also to get energized.
Consider creating contests that encourage exercise, either in-office or based on external participation. But be careful with this because work can feel plenty competitive without adding more pressure on your people. Make sure to keep things friendly and fun. Do not force exercise competitions on anyone.
