Can Speeding Tickets Kill Your License to Practice Law?

When it comes to speeding, just about everyone thinks about it as a mere nothing offense. After all, the newest judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals was found guilty of speeding nine times in the last 15 years and it didn't matter.

That's right, nine times.

However, while the judge, like Ferris Bueller, just seemed to get away with it, others just aren't so lucky ... with a little effort, or lack thereof, an attorney can kill their license with speeding tickets. Here's how:

It's All About Not Making Several FTAs

Basically, when it comes to lawyers getting dinged right in the license related to speeding tickets, we're talking about lawyers getting busted for driving fast then failing to appear repeatedly, or neglecting to pay fines and failing to appear for that when summoned. (Or going beyond just a routine speeding ticket into the world of reckless driving and drunk driving, but we all already know about that).

Sure, you might miss traffic court once, or maybe twice in a five or ten-year period, but if it happens repeatedly, you're probably going to end up in hot water with your state bar. And to the traffic court, you'll probably just end up looking as guilty as this consummate professional. Making a mockery of the traffic court once (or maybe twice) prevented a lawyer from getting licensed.

The infractions may be minor, but the court is real, the contempt and FTAs are real, and if you mess around in traffic court, you could find your license to practice in as much jeopardy as your license to drive. It doesn't take that much to earn a suspension, as one lawyer learned a couple years ago when he just couldn't stop insulting his adversaries.
