While lawyering is certainly hard, stressful work, if you don't have a full caseload, and you want more money in your pocket, consider finding yourself a smart side hustle. Think the sort of hustle that will compliment your practice either by helping you network, or by establishing your reputation.
In an interview with Oprah, Michelle Obama shared her mother's advice to her, after she confided that she was not happy as a bigtime lawyer. That advice: "Make that money, worry about being happy later."
If you can control your hourly rate, there's very little reason not to increase your rates annually, even by slight amounts like $10 or $20 per hour. It'll add up over time, and small increases are not likely to ruffle too many client feathers.
While you may not want to believe that your livelihood depends on salesmanship, if you have to land your own clients, you better learn to sell your services. Sure, there's a big difference between selling legal services and any- or everything else, being smart about how you sell your services to clients can reap big financial gains.
As a lawyer, you are the product. If you let yourself fall into disrepair, you, as the product, are going to look a lot worse to potential and current clients. Taking care of yourself, mentally, physically, financially, and whatever other way you need to, is critical when it comes to maintaining a quality law practice and a solid reputation.
