Steven Fabrizio Named GC of Motion Picture Assn. of America

By Gabriella Khorasanee, JD on December 16, 2013 8:55 AM

Steven Fabrizio, a veteran attorney in the entertainment industry, is taking his work in content protection to new heights as he has accepted a position as senior executive vice president and global general counsel of the Motion Picture Association of America, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Recognized "as one of the preeminent copyright and content protection lawyers in the country," Fabrizio has represented the MPAA as lead outside counsel as a partner at the Washington, D.C., office of Jenner & Block.

Early Gigs Starting Out

Steven Fabrizio's early work was with the Recording Industry Association of America, where he was lauded as the "principal architect" of industry litigation strategies developed to deal with online music piracy. As the senior Vice President in the business and legal affairs department, one of his tasks was to deal with Napster, one of the first publicized music file sharing services, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

After his stint at the RIAA, he was a senior partner at Jenner & Block, where for the last 10 years, he co-chaired the firm's award-winning Content, Media & Entertainment practice, according to an official MPAA press release. His work at the firm included negotiating the settlement that led to the shutdown of file-trading site Isohunt.com, and motion picture studios' victory over cyberlocker Hotfile.com, reports the Los Angeles Times.

MPAA's Leading Man

Former Sen. Chris Dodd, the MPAA's Chairman and CEO, stated: "As the MPAA's new Global General Counsel, [Fabrizio] will continue to protect the rights of our industry's creators and makers so they can do what they do best: tell stories that entertain audiences across the globe."

Steven Fabrizio shared those sentiments, and said is excited about his new role. "MPAA's advocacy for its studio members is more important today than it has ever been," Fabrizio said in an MPAA press release. "I am thrilled to be joining an MPAA team that I have respected and admired for many years."
