Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
Wedding bells won't be ringing anytime soon for Nikoleta Karoly. Especially after she allegedly tried to choke her boyfriend for refusing to marry her.
Sheriff's deputies in Collier County, Fla., arrested Karoly, 24, after a fight with her boyfriend at her home, the Naples Daily News reports. Though the dispute was mainly over the wedding Karoly was hoping for, her drive to get married wasn't entirely motivated by love.
It was more about getting a new immigration visa, a sheriff's arrest report states.
Nikoleta Karoly, whose country of origin was not disclosed in the sheriff's report, had been trying to persuade her boyfriend to marry her because her immigration visa had expired.
Karoly's boyfriend, who'd only been seeing her for two months, told deputies he refused Karoly's proposal because she was becoming increasingly violent, according to the Daily News.
During an argument about the visa issue three weeks ago, Karoly allegedly punched her boyfriend, an arrest report states. More violent arguments ensued, culminating in the alleged choking attack on Saturday.
Karoly also allegedly made verbal threats, saying she'd stab her boyfriend with a kitchen knife if he didn't tie the knot. She faces a charge of domestic violence.
News reports do not specify what type of immigration visa Karoly held. And while marriage to a U.S. citizen can eventually change an immigrant's status to that of a permanent resident, it's a somewhat complicated process that involves petitions and interviews to make sure the marriage is genuine. The services of an experienced immigration lawyer may be helpful.
Suffice it to say, Nikoleta Karoly's boyfriend isn't hearing wedding bells in his future. But he is hearing something else: a persistent ringing in his ear that he blames on Karoly slapping him across the face.
Karoly's defense: "I am a woman. How hard can I hit him?" the sheriff's report states, according to The Huffington Post.
