Homeless Man Sues Parents for Not Loving Him Enough

A homeless man is suing his parents for not getting enough love.

Bernard Bey, 32, of Brooklyn, blames his joblessness and homelessness on his parents. Bey alleges he was not loved enough and neglected as a child, reports New York's WNBC-TV. As a result, he finds himself in his current predicament: filing a lawsuit against his parents for being homeless.

Not surprisingly, the lawsuit is self-written. Bey claims that his parents caused him mental anguish and made him feel "unloved and beaten by the world."

Bey argues that parents should love their children and wish the best for their kids, WNBC reports. But instead, Bey says that he was mentally and physically abused up until the time that he ran away from home at the age of 12. The homeless man then ended up in and out of shelter systems until he turned 16.

In his lawsuit, Bey is asking for more than $200,000 in damages. He also has a plan on how his parents can come up with the money, including mortgaging their home and opening Domino's Pizza franchises, according to WNBC.

Bey's parents reportedly live in public housing and say they are in no position to mortgage their home or open any pizza franchises. In his defense, Bey's alleged stepfather also says he is not the homeless man's father.

In looking at the claim, and ignoring certain aspects of ridiculousness, you may be wondering if a child could bring a valid lawsuit against his parents.

There are laws that provide that parents shall not abuse or neglect their children. And parents are expected to feed, clothe, and shelter their children or face criminal charges.

However, nowhere in the law does it state that parents must love their children or wish them the best. And even if such laws existed, it's not clear how a plaintiff could prove that this lack of love actually caused his joblessness and homelessness.

To show that he is not completely unreasonable, Bernard Bey says that he will drop the lawsuit if his family would simply have dinner with him. Meantime, relatives told New York's WCBS-TV that Bey has psychological issues.
