Virginia Man Runs Over Himself, Faces DUI Charge

By Ceylan Pumphrey, Esq. | Last updated on

There are many straightforward ways that a person can get a DUI: being pulled over for driving erratically, DUI checkpoints, or being involved in a car accident. And then, there are less conventional ways to get a DUI, such as while riding a horse on the freeway.

Regardless of how you end up being arrested for a DUI, your day or night turns from good to bad in an instant. But, being charged with a DUI after being hit by your own car, is just adding insult to injury. While this may sound like something out of a TV show or movie, it actually happened to a man in Virginia.

How Did This Happen?

Isaac Bonsu was initially pulled over for an equipment violation. According to the dashboard camera released by police, Bonsu got out of his car and started running. Apparently, however, Bonsu forgot to put the car in park before exiting the vehicle, so when he ran in front of his car, he ended up being hit by the car.

This didn't stop him though, as the video show him get up and continue running away. He was caught by police after a brief pursuit. Bonsu is now facing charges of felony hit-and-run, a third-time DWI, possession of marijuana, and an illegal window tint -- which was probably the initial reason he was pulled over.

Although hearing that a person ran over his car and subsequently was charged with a DUI is funny, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol is no laughing matter. If you're intoxicated, it's always a good idea to find a sober driver -- whether it's a friend or rideshare service. However, if you are arrested for a DUI, it's in your best interest to contact a DUI attorney who can explain the DUI laws in your state and advocate on your behalf.
