Thanksgiving, is quite possibly the best holiday ever. It has little to do with personal beliefs, and everything to do with stuffing your face. What's not to like? As you get ready for the weekend of all weekends, make sure you take these steps so you can actually enjoy a few days off (yeah right).
Notify Clients Beforehand
If you do plan on taking some time off, in addition to Thanksgiving day, be sure to notify your clients, that have matters pending with that you, that you will be out of the office. That way, if they have anything they want to bring up to you, they can do it while you are still in the office, and they will know that an answer may be delayed because your office will be closed. Also, many courts are closed on the day after Thanksgiving, but double check with the particular courts in your jurisdiction if you have any litigation matters pending.
Advise Clients on Black Friday
If any of your clients own brick-and-mortar retail operations, you may want to give them a head's up about OSHA's fact sheet on Crowd Management Safety Guidelines for Retailers. They may not have people camped out in front of their store, but your clients will thank you for your foresight and thoughtfulness. Think brownie points.
Advise Clients on Cyber Monday
If your clients sell products online, advise them about the high incidence of identity theft and fraud that occurs on Cyber Monday. It's also important to make sure that your clients' web stores all comply with state tax laws.
If you plan on working over the weekend, and expect your staff to be on call, let them know in advance. There's nothing worse than planning a long weekend and getting a call out of nowhere about work. Yes, emergencies come up, but let your staff live a little. Don't be a Scrooge.
If you do plan on trying to take some time away from the office to spend with the family, then definitely make sure you set up your autoresponders for those few who will work through the weekend, or for clients who think you work every day of the year. If you're a solo-practitioner, give your clients an alternative contact, or check your email every so often just to make sure nothing urgent has come up.
