Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
In honor of National Relaxation Day on Friday (August 15) -- yes that is a thing -- we thought we would cover a book that the ABA sent us to review: "Yoga for Lawyers: Mind-Body Techniques to Feel Better All the Time."* What better way to unwind than to wind yourself up into a human pretzel?
Jokes aside, I've been practicing yoga for more than 10 years, and the benefits are both physical and mental. Since lawyers are a special breed, it's only right that we have our own book on yoga instruction.
Let's take a closer look.
As you can imagine, "Yoga for Lawyers" is written by two of our own. One author, Hallie N. Love, is not only a cum laude law graduate, but also nationally certified in Pilates, Positive Psychology and Yoga Therapy by Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar. As a lawyer, she was familiar with the amount of stress that lawyers deal with, but she also knew from personal experience, the restorative effects of practicing yoga.
The other author, Nathalie Martin, is a lawyer and professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Practicing yoga for 15 years, Martin also is a yoga teacher, and "part of the growing movement to incorporate mindfulness practices into legal education."
After a brief intro to yoga and the harms of stress, the book is full of advice on sleep, overall health, and tips for those of us who sit at desks most of the day. Each pose is accompanied by instructions and a photo of Hallie N. Love demonstrating the exercise. Most helpful to lawyers, the book even includes suggested exercises you can do "in the office and on the go."
"Yoga for Lawyers" is a quick and easy read, but it's also meant as a desktop reference. You are not expected to memorize all of the poses, rather, as needed, you should refer to your copy to see the photos demonstrating proper alignment.
You can buy "Yoga for Lawyers: Mind-Body Techniques to Feel Better All the Time" on the ABA online shop.
