Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
It's been a while since news came out that Canadian lawyers were offering legal services out of Walmarts. It was only a matter of time before Walmarts in the States began offering space for lawyers. As it turns out, this is already happening.
Not only are Walmart law firms here in the United States, but Georgia attorney Evan Kaine has been operating his Walmart office in Atlanta since 2012, according to the ABA Journal. By all accounts, it has been a successful venture for him, considering that he opened an additional two locations in Georgia last year.
Go Where the Supply Is
Kaine was inspired by a statistic he read that about four out of five low-income Americans had unmet legal needs. So he decided to set up shop in the store where that particular demographic regularly shops: Walmart.
His intuition was dead on. Through high visibility, he's been able to achieve a stable practice that's poised for expansion. Still, it's not as if all of his clients stick around for the ride. According to the ABA Journal, Kaine estimates that he keeps about twenty percent of the cases that come through his Walmart offices. A fair percentage of the rest are referred to other local law firms in the region.
Not the Only Game in Town
Kaine's firm is not the only game in town. There's another outfit operating out of Walmarts called The Law Store. This practice is also full service, but it's able to handle many cases without referring them out. What do we mean by full service? In the case of The Law Store, that means estate planning, family law, and worker's comp.
Both Kaine and The Law Store hope to expand to more Wal-Mart locations, but they're taking it slow. "Expansion doesn't do any good if the firm can't serve the public," Kaine said.
