How to Stand Out at Your Law Firm

Maybe it goes without saying that sticking out and standing out are entirely different things.

But this is a blog so we're going to say it anyway. Plus, the difference may be more subtle than you think when it comes to your law firm.

Sticking out is like a thumb waiting to get hammered. It's wearing blue and orange together. It's, well, not standing out.

Hard Work, Stay Out of Trouble

When everybody else is inside, some lawyers are out standing. Sorry, old joke.

Anyway, it takes extra-ordinary effort to be an extra-ordinary attorney. Big firms will tell you to work hard, stay out of trouble, develop a niche, join an association, write an article, etc.

All of that could go without saying because there are lots of articles about that. But there are other things -- subtle tasks -- that can also help you stand out.

Allison Peryea, a small-firm owner, says it's about bagels.

Bagels to Business Owners

Basically, Peryea says, you can stand out by doing little things -- especially in a small firm. Practice good customer service, be thoughtful of co-workers, cover for people.

"That's the type of person who firm owners will want to keep around, especially if you also bring bagels," she says.

And she's not kidding about the bagels. It's a small thing that counts.

It shows -- to the business owners -- when you treat the business like it matters to you. And it could.
