Body builders -- not lawyers -- made up the expression, "no pain, no gain."
There are some mutual truths, however. Lawyers inflict pain, and they usually gain in the process.
Of course, that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about the pain or gain of changing firms.
No Pain, No Gain
The wisdom here is in recognizing that pain is part of the growth process. If you think it hurts to change firms, imagine what a caterpillar must feel like turning into a butterfly?
So if you miss your old colleagues, for example, think of them like an old carcass you left behind. Sure you were part of a many-legged team, but now you can fly!
Seriously, see how fun changing firms can be? It's about attitude -- and money, of course.
If you took that new job for something else, like work-life balance reasons, that's another story. You should be happy already.
First Week at the Firm
In the meantime, there is so much going on your first week at a new firm. You need a list to manage it, like this:
- What to Wear Where
- How to Make a Great Impression
- Five People You Should Avoid
- How to Get One-on-One Time With Partners
Some of it is going to hurt, but that's okay. By the end of the day, you'll have a few more dollars and maybe some muscles, too.
