Lawyering on the go with your iPad?

Want an app that will allow you to view your office computer screen just as though you were sitting on your desk?

Of course you do.

All you iPad-centric attorneys should consider a remote PC control app, perfect for when you leave a file behind or need to check on something back at the office with a tap of the iPad screen.

Remote access apps have been around for a while on the iPhone but their usability was limited due to the small screen. The iPad makes these much more powerful tools and an indispensable part of a mobile lawyer's workflow.

With a remote PC control app you can log into your desktop remotely and control it quite easily. You don't have to be on the same network. An Internet connection is needed and the remote system must be online too.

LogMeln Ignition is the most expensive of the remote PC control apps at $29.99, but likely the best and most useful. LogMeIn just added the ability to transfer files to/from the computer and iPad.

Like all remote access apps, LogMeIn Ignition requires that you install a small piece of free software on the computers you want to access as well as the app on your iPad, Tablet Legal reports. Once configured, a few taps gives you access to your desktop as though you are sitting at your desk.

There are three ways to control your desktop mouse through the iPad depending on your preference. Tablet Legal is partial to direct input which essentially makes your desktop screen a touch screen: wherever you touch the mouse clicks. The virtual mouse mode overlays a mouse on your iPad that you control with your finger.

The added file manager makes navigating deep into the folders on your desktop computer quite easy, too. The file manager also makes it easy to to pull docs onto your iPad or move them between computers.

If you want to save 10 bucks, another second choice is Jump Desktop, which has fewer bells and whistles but lets you access your desktop nonetheless.
