Everybody thought robots would take over like the Terminator with that awful promise: "I'll be back."
The science-fiction writers haven't helped, except for occasionally introducing a friendly auto-bot. But for the most part, the bots are threatening everything from our planet to our jobs.
So maybe we're exaggerating a little. But seriously, lawyers, you need to do something to protect yourself from the AI revolution.
Lawyer Jobs Already Gone
We know smart robots are already taking about 23 percent of lawyer jobs. A large amount of attorney work can be automated; AI knows this.
What AI doesn't know, however, is that humans are prepared for it. Kai-Fu Lee, a former top executive at Google and Microsoft, says the best way to protect ourselves is to be human.
"AI cannot be creative," he told the Techonomy 2018 conference. "It cannot be strategic or use common sense. It can't be compassionate."
He explained that AI can perform analytical work, but not the hands-on work. That's because there is no hand, or spoon.
White-Collar Jobs Next
So maybe you've seen this movie, and you think AI is just for geeks and computer-savvy teenagers. Now look at your computer screen and your smart phone, and think again.
Lee, who now invests in technology, says AI will replace all kinds of jobs. He said it will hit white-collar workers first.
"Anyone whose work is routine and has not much human-to-human interaction, those jobs are prone to be totally displaced," he said.
So yeah, it's time to work on your people skills because robots have better research skills than you do.
