Instagram, the photo-sharing app, is a portal to 800 million users.
That's a lot of potential clients, but how do you turn your photos into business opportunities? It might work for photographers, filmmakers, or other visual artists, but who wants to look at pictures of lawyers or their office furniture?
One superlawyer figured it out. He says its about connecting with clients in a non-legal way.
Todd Spodek, a New York City attorney, has been featured on Fox News, Entertainment Tonight and Entrepreneur. He was named a "rising star" by Super Lawyers last year, and is known as a master of social media.
He is a big fan of Instagram, which he called "a phenomenal thing." He said it helps his firm stay relevant and connect with people.
"At the end of the day, what differentiates your law firm from every other firm?" he asked. "In addition to our legal work, our clients want to know that we also take down porterhouse steaks at Peter Lugers, and enjoy the happy hour at Ten Bells."
Lawyers who don't use Instagram, he said, are missing the market. It's an opportunity for leads, brand recognition, and relevancy.
More Than Hastags
Virtually all lawyers use social media but few know how it helps their practice. According to one survey, barely seven percent believe it is directly responsible for bringing in new clients.
Many law firms post pictures of themselves with hashtag advertisements on Instagram, but that's not the way you do it. Money is not for nothing, even if social media is free.
Success takes a lot more, like being authentic, engaged, and human. Or with Instagram, uploading photos of porterhouse steaks.
